BETTY BRIGGS, EIGHT YEARS OLD, VICTIM OF TRAGIC ACCIDENT;
VEHICLE BACKS OVER BODY
Automobile accidents claimed the sixteenth Knox county victim this year and the second to die in Galesburg when Betty Briggs, eight-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs Clarence Briggs 956 Yates street,was run over and killed at 7:25 this morning just south of the Morton avenue and Yates street intersection by a Golden Cream dairy truck
driven by M.M. Herndon, 67 North Farnham street. Mr. Herndon was delivering milk on his route when the fatal accident occurred. He was driving south on Morton avenue, next to the Rio tracks of the C.B. and Q railroad, and had gone a hundred feet past Yates street before stopping to deliver milk to a woman customer. The driver started to back his truck up to Yates street to resume his route, but felt the vehicle pass over an object, and he observed a young girl screaming "Oh, Betty," putting her hands to her eyes. He stopped the truck immediately and alighted to find the young victim of the accident run over by the truck and apparently hit by a rear bolt on the wagon. The city ambulance was called to the scene, but the child was
pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Galesburg Cottage
Hospital. Betty Briggs was the daughter of Clarence and Georgia Briggs. She leaves her parents; the following brothers and sisters, Eugene, Marion, Junior Albert, Darlene and Wayne; her grandmother, Mrs. Hettie Engle; and her grandfather, Albert Briggs. Funeral rites will be held at 10 o'clock, Monday morning, from the Dean Funeral home. Dr. G. S. Bower, coroner, conducted an inquest at one o'clock this afternoon in the funeral home.
