Shirley graduated from Gilson High School with the class of 1942.

She married Charles Briggs in June of 1942 in Norfolk ,Virginia. They raised 5 children. They were divorced in 1969

Shirley D. Beam, 62, 503 South Jefferson Street, Abingdon, died at 5:55 a.m. Thursday November 27, 1986 at St. Mary's Hospital, Galesburg, IL.

Born March 2, 1924, in Galesburg to Arthur and Ruby Huggins Fuller, (she was first married to Charles Briggs) then she married Lewis W. Beam Nov. 8, 1969, in Galesburg.

He survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Janet L. Smith of Abingdon,(Janet L. Briggs Wallick passed away in 2006 Memorial 13428965); four sons, Charles D. Briggs Jr. of London (Mills), James R. Briggs of Fort Meade, MD, William G. Briggs, serving with the Army in West Germany, and Judson G. Briggs of Dubuque, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her mother, Ruby McKee of Knoxville; and two brothers, Robert E. McKee of Osceola, and Ronald McKee of Galesburg.

She was raised and educated in Gilson and lived in this area all of her life. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home, Knoxville with Rev. Kenneth Kendell officiating.

Burial was in Gilson Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Abingdon Ambulance Service.
