Ella Mae was the youngest of four children. She was born near Toronto. Her father, William H. Bronson died in the 1870's and her mother, Ellen Eagan, shortly after the 1881 census. Along with her two brothers, William and James and older sister, Elizabeth, the four Bronson children immigrated to North Dakota via Port Huron Michigan in 1884. Their mother's brother, Owen Egan, had been homesteading in North Dakota and had become acquainted with her future husband, Milton Bailey. They were married in October of 1884. Her older sister, Elizabeth, married Milton's best friend, Zeph Lane, the following year. In 1888 they moved to the State of Washington and started a Dairy just north of Spokane which they called Broadview. They had seven children (Myrtle b. 1886, Verna b. 1888, Raymond b. 1891, Hazel, b. 1893, Wilma b. 1897, Milton b. 1901, and Montana b. 1908. In 1906 the couple moved east to Miles City, Montana where they started a new dairy and once again call it Broadview.
