Col. Brown was in the 86th regiment N.C. Militia. This regiment was organized in southern Mecklenburg County. It was designated the 69th regiment under the 1837 Militia Act and was assigned to the 11th Brigade. It was redesignated the 86th Regiment under the September 1861 Militia Act and was assigned to the 21st Brigade.
