Betty Browning, 89, died recently at her home in Salt Lake City of natural causes.

Born in Russia on September 3, 1911, Betty lived most of her life in Southern California. She and her husband, John Gordon Browning, moved to Utah in 1957 when he became manager of KPRQ radio station in Salt Lake. Gordon died in 1989.

The Brownings were involved not only in the broadcasting industry, but also in politics, public relations for McDonald's, Inc., the Utah Industrial Promotion Division, and as friends and benefactors of the University of Utah.

Betty was a member of the University of Utah John R. Park Society and the Health Sciences Council. She and her late husband established the Gordon and Betty Browning Health Sciences Scholarship Fund to benefit U students in the School of Medicine and the colleges of Nursing, Pharmacy, and Health. In recognition of their generosity, the Browning Plaza and Auditorium at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center were named in their honor in 1982. Betty's warmth and friendship will be missed by her many friends and colleagues in the community and at the University.

A graveside service will be held Monday, March 19, at 12:30 p.m. at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 1342 East 500 South, Salt Lake City, UT. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Betty's memory may be made to the Browning Scholarship Fund, c/o Development Office, 201 Presidents Circle, Rm. 304, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112.
