BERET (Betsy)(Ullenvig) BROX

Mrs. Beret Brox, 79, one of the early pioneers of the Litchville country, answered death's call at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert C. Berg, last Saturday morning, May 14, 1932, at 79 years, 6 months and 13 days. Deceased had been in poor health for the past month, a sufferer with heart and kidney trouble and a general break down due to her advanced age.

Mrs. Brox, born Beret Mattison, was the daughter of Mathias and Maren Mattison, and first saw the light of day at Otterota, Norway, a little island in the vicinity of Trondhjem, on November 1, 1852. At the age of 18 years, she came to America, settling at Baldwin, Wisconsin, where she lived for 8 years.

Married to Ingvart Brox at Hudson, Wisconsin, on June 8, 1878, she and her husband lived at Baldwin for 3 years before coming westward. Coming to North Dakota in the fall of 1881, the little family spent that winter in Buffalo, and then in the spring of 1882, came to live on the homestead and tree claim, a half of Section 24, Greenland Township (Barnes County) where Mr. Brox had previously labored to erect a sod house which was the family's first home in the west and the first settler's home in all of Greenland township. The nearest neighbor of the family in that early day was Tom Tryler, who lived seven miles distant, in Sheridan Township, LaMoure County.

Mrs. Brox was the mother of nine children, four of whom preceded her in death, two in infancy, Celia at the age of ten years and Mrs. Magnus Bakken (Mary) who died in 1926. The husband and father died in 1916. The five children who survive are: Mrs. G.C. Berg (Helga), Litchville; Mrs. W. A. Olsen (Inga), Roy, Montana; Fred Brox, St. Paul, MN; Mrs. Magnus Bakken (Emma), Chetek, WI; and Mrs. Mabel Lindstrom, Litchville. ND. Surviving, also, are 31 grand children and eight great grand children.
A pioneer in every true meaning of the term, deceased experienced all the hardships , the loneliness and the trials of pioneer life, as well as its few meager joys. Thirty years ago she lost her sense of hearing and for the past six years she has been blind as well, but she bore her afflictions with great patience and ever showed her keen interest in her home and children. In spite of these hardships and afflictions she plodded on and carried the burden of life as best she could – a true pioneer to the end.

The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon of this week with services at First Lutheran Church of Litchville at two o'clock and with Rev. J. N. Dordal as the officiating pastor. Special musical numbers were rendered by a quartet from Marion composed of Miss Opdahl, Mrs. Spoerl and the Draheim brothers with Mrs. C. Arduser as piano accompanist.

Pallbearers were: Ole B. Johnson, Thos. Gudmestad, Ben Johnson, Wm. King, Morris Wheeler and Edward McKenna. Interment was made in the family plot in the St. Thomas Cemetery, northwest of town, at the side of the loved ones who preceded her to the "land beyond."

Thus, we lay away another of the pioneers of the great northwest, builders of a state and nation. They did a great work nobly and well and honor is their just due.
