Civil engineer. In 1868, he was commissioned by the Meiji goverment in Japan to desighn and construct over thirty lighthouses around 1,500 miles of coastline, essential for Japanese overseas trade. While there he also desighned bridges, roads and harbours, including the modernising of Yokohama. He returned to England in 1868 after falling out with his Japanese employers. In Japan, he is remembered for his fundamental contribution to their technical development and his headstone was erected in 1991 by Yokohama Chamber of Commence and was attended by the Japanese Ambassador.
