Verena LaMar Lewis Bryson died Sunday, January 10, 2010.
Born in Brevard, North Carolina, February 22, 1927, only child of Louise Erwin and Lamar English Lewis. She was educated in Transylvania County, North Carolina, Public Schools, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and obtained her Masters in Library Science from the University of South Carolina at Columbia. She began her career as a Librarian at Furman University. Later, as the Base Librarian for Donaldson Air Force Base, in Greenville County, she won the first, (1961), of her many John Cotton Dana Awards, among the other professional Awards and Recognitions for Excellence in her chosen field that she would continue to receive over the course of her long professional career. She spent most of her professional life at the Greenville County library. At retirement, she was the Greenville County Library's Director of Community Relations. After retirement, she was appointed by Governor Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. to the South Carolina State Library Board where she served with distinction for a number of years thereafter. She loved her Church, The Church of the Redeemer, (Episcopal), Greenville, SC, where she was a long time member of the choir, served on the Alter Guild, and in other capacities. Among her many community and social activities and affiliations, her favorite was her membership in Greenville's Thursday Club. She was married to the Late William Jefferson Bryson, and will be interred by his side in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville. She was predeceased by her daughter, Verina Patton Bryson Conrad, (1957-2008). She is survived by her son, William Jefferson, Jr., her son-in-law, Kevin Peter Conrad, her twin granddaughters, Blair Conrad and Erin Conrad Jenkins, her great granddaughter Madison Patton Jenkins, and Mr. Bo Jangles (the Last Cat).
Memorials may be made to The Church of the Redeemer, Episcopal, Greenville, SC, or Open Arms Hospice, of St. Francis Hospital, Greenville, SC. The family wishes to offer loving thanks to the management and caregivers of Heavenly Care Services, of Greenville, for their indispensable care and assistance during Mrs. Bryson's extended final illness.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 12, 2010 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 13, at 10:30 am at The Church of the Redeemer, Episcopal. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
