Jewish philosopher, theologian, Bible translator. He was born in Vienna, studied in Vienna, Leipzig, Berlin and Zurich, and soon entered the Zionist Movement, more for religious and cultural than for political reasons. With Franz Rosenzweig he translated the Old Testament into German. In 1938 he had to emigrate to Israel. In there he made many efforts to make peace between the Israelis and the Arabs. As a philosopher he is best known for his philosophy of dialogue in his book "I and Thou".
