We lost our loving father, Bill Bucher of El Cajon. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was 86 years old.

He was born in Lancaster, PA and raised on a dairy farm. Coming to the conclusion early on that he did not want to farm for a living, he joined the Navy at the age of 17 where he was trained as an aircraft mechanic.

After discharge in 1946, he met his future wife on a visit to Chicago but returned to Pennsylvania to attend college. Later he attended aviation school in Tulsa. In 1949 he was hired by American Airlines and in 1955 he became a Chicago-based Flight Engineer, until transferring to San Diego in 1972.

He retired in 1987 after 38 years with AA. He enjoyed gardening and his computer but his real love was reading, especially history books.

He followed his favorite San Diego and Chicago sports teams. He knew so much about so many subjects. He was a true gentleman and we will forever miss his wonderful smile. He continued to live in his house independently until early January.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth of 51 years. He is survived by his daughters Cathy Akin (Bill) and Denise Howell (Terry) and grandchildren Bree, Cody and Kelli.

A viewing will be held 4-8pm April 12 and funeral services will be on April 13 at noon, both at El Camino Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dad's name to the Arthritis Foundation . Published in U-T San Diego on Apr. 12, 2012
