Marietta Mae Grace was born May 13, 1917, on a farm in Edmunds County near Ipswich, South Dakota to Joe and Frances (Pharis) Grace. Her family moved to a farm near Plana, South Dakota and she attended rural schools in Brown County. As a young woman she worked and boarded in Columbia. On Nov. 29, 1935, she married August Buntrock. They lived on the original Albert and Ida Buntrock homestead northwest of Columbia. For the first three years of their marriage Grandma Ida lived with Marietta and August, and Marietta recalled in her 1985 remarks prepared for the Buntrock reunion that Grandma Ida taught her to cook and bake, and helped take care of the family, which included the teacher at the nearby parochial school, several students at the school, hired men, her own children, and often nieces and nephews. She and August raised seven children on the family farm. Marietta was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the St. John's Ladies Aid. She served on the Columbia Board of Education and was instrumental in keeping Columbia High School open after the school building was destroyed by fire in 1960. August died Nov. 19, 1959, and Marietta continued to farm with her sons Dwight and Dwain until 1970, when she moved to Aberdeen. In the 1970s she worked at the Brown County Register of Deeds office. Later she served as an executive assistant with the South Dakota Highway Patrol's Aberdeen district office and she was very proud of her career there. She loved politics and was active in the Brown County and South Dakota Democratic Party. Throughout her life she volunteered for Democratic campaigns for offices at every level. Most recently she volunteered for the campaigns of her great-niece, Representative Stephanie Herseth. She worked on election day at polling places in Brown County. She was active in the Brown County Green Thumb programs. In August, 2004 she was elected to the Board of Directors of the South Dakota Area IV Senior Nutrition Project representing Brown County. Marietta derived her greatest happiness from her Christian faith and from her family, all of whom she was extremely proud.

Marietta is survived by five children: Marlous Ambrose, Victorville, Calif.; Linda Gall (Lyle), Scottsdale, Ariz.; Dwight Buntrock (Carolyn), Columbia, S.D.; Dwain Buntrock (Judy), Columbia, S.D.; and Janet Sherman (Patrick), Lodi, Calif., and one brother, Virgil Grace, Sioux Falls and 24 grandchildren: LeAnn Buntrock, Janelle Allison, Greg Buntrock, Rick Ambrose, Russell Ambrose, Lynne' Duncan, Charte' Carroll, Troy Fuller, William Fuller, Kris Bower, Val Breitag, Holly Gallun, Jason Gall, Tylynn Gall, Travis Gall, Regan Gall, Ross Buntrock, Andrew Buntrock, Heidi Buntrock, Shane Buntrock, Dustin Buntrock, Heather Buntrock, Ryan Sherman, Amber Fitzgerald and 40 great-grandchildren.
