J. Shanard Burke, died with his family by his side on September 21, 2009 at Edgewood Vista in Sioux Falls, SD. He was 82.
John Shanard Burke was born May 13, 1927, to Walter H. and Jean (Shanard) Burke in Pierre, SD. Shanard attended Pierre schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Service-Coast Guard on April 10, 1945 missing his graduation day to begin his service on the European-African-Middle Eastern tour. Shanard served as Fireman First Class until he was discharged on May 15, 1946. He also served as 2nd Lt. First Class of the U.S. Infantry. He attended the University of South Dakota. Shanard married Mary Patricia Knutson on September 27, 1962 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Their daughter Carla Jean was born August 2, 1966.
Shan joined the Equitable Life Assurance Society in 1953 in Pierre, and later founded the Central South Dakota Life Underwriters Association, serving as its first president. He acquired his broker license in 1968 and established Burke Real Estate in 1977, which is now carried on by his great-nephew Robert J. Burke. Shanard was named SD State Realtor of the Year in 1994. Shan was president of the South Dakota Association of Realtors in 1989. A devoted member of many organizations in his community of Pierre, Shanard belonged to Trinity Episcopal Church, the American Legion Post #8, the Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce, the Hughes County Cancer Society, the Pierre Players, Capital Area Counseling, Habitat for Humanity, the Central North American Trade Corridor and South Dakota Easter Seals. He served on the board of directors of BankWest, served as co-founder and charter member of the Pierre Elks Lodge No. 1953, was a charter member of the Pierre Optimist Club, was a co-founder and chairman of the board for River Park, was a co-founder and chairman of the board of Capital University Center, and founder and board member of the Oahe YMCA.
Shanard's passionate love of his community involved a great number of endeavors to promote and enhance not only the city but also its residents. One of his efforts, the Pierre Petunia Project engaged 300 residents to plant 25,000 petunia and marigold plants. This effort earned Pierre the national grand prize in Family Circle Magazine's first Make America Beautiful contest in 1985. In an ongoing and continuing beautification effort of Shanard's, Burke Real Estate has sponsored Yard of the Week for nearly 30 years. Additionally, Shanard spearheaded efforts to establish Capital University Center and would be very pleased to know that his dream continued to grow as evidenced by the recent opening of its new facility.
Shan loved to garden, his yard was a showcase of flowers at their home on Grand Avenue. Many days he could be found gardening at home or at the office in his dress shirt and tie. For years, school children looked forward to Shan hosting the Annual Get Out Of School Coke Fest at Burke Real Estate. He was an avid golfer, eager to get onto the course with good friends. He enjoyed traveling, visiting new sights and being with his family. His great-nephew Sean referred to him as the King of Ping Pong. With his wife Mary K, Shanard enjoyed opening his home and eagerly poured friends and neighbors his famous cups of coffee. Above all, he loved his daughter. Many witnessed him filming her walking off to her first day of school every year, just one example of his constant support of her. During his time in Sioux Falls, Shanard touched the lives of those who cared for him at Edgewood Vista and Compassionate Care Hospice. His family is so thankful for their loving care of him.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary K. Burke, his brother Charles H. Burke, and his parents Walter H. and Jean Burke.
