Vivian was born September 29, 1926 to Elton and Cora Burke at Orient, South Dakota. She graduated from Orient High School in 1945. Vivian graduated from Methodist State Hospital School of Nursing in Mitchell, SD with a degree in nursing where she made many lifelong friends. She worked at the Miller and Faulkton, South Dakota hospitals after graduation.
Vivian married William Johnson on October 26, 1956 and moved to Gettysburg. She became a loving mom to three children and an inseparable mate to Bill. She worked at the Gettysburg Hospital, working with patients who needed extra help. They moved to Pierre, South Dakota in 1969 where she worked as a charge nurse at Rivercrest Nursing Home from 1975-1985. She also volunteered at the Hospice thrift store with her friends.
Vivian loved crocheting, bowling, lunch and coffee dates with her lifelong friends and most of all-her grandchildren. With every grandchild there was always a picture with grandma giving them a bath in the kitchen sink!
Vivian was always there for those around her and was loved so much by her family. We are going to miss her, but know she is free to be the person she was. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and participated in women’s circle at church.
She is survived by loving husband, Bill; son: Jeff (Dona Mae) Johnson; daughters: Pam (Don) Templeton and Sue (Tom) Armbruster; grandchildren: Colby Johnson, Kenan Johnson, Krista (Jonny) Wiener, Casey Templeton, Trevor Armbruster, and Tyler Armbruster; great grandchildren: Jordan Sanders, Treyton Sanders, and Carson Sanders; sisters: Joan Eggers and Winifred Burke; and many nieces and nephews.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents: Elton and Cora Burke; brothers: James, Roy, Merle, Melvin, and Elton Jr.; sisters: Alice Kinchloe and Evelyn Kruse.
Vivian’s Family would like to thank the caring staff of Golden Living Center for all the loving care she received for the past two years.
