Linnea Burke, 96, of Pierre, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, Maryhouse Nursing Center, Pierre. Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Feigum-VanLith Funeral Home, Pierre. Funeral service will be Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, First Baptist Church, Pierre. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Pierre.

Linnea Palmquist was born in Barnum, MN on March 13, 1911 to John and Anna (Wettersten) Palmquist. She attended school in Barnum and Duluth, MN. Following high school, she attended Bethel Academy in St. Paul, MN, where she met her future husband. Linnea was united in marriage to Howard Burke in Witten, SD on Sept. 2, 1932. They lived on various farms in Tripp and Mellette counties, where they raised their seven children. Education was always a very important part of her life as she was life-long learner. Linnea was an avid reader and worked her cross-word puzzles each day. She went back to college and graduated from Dakota Wesleyan with an Elementary Education Degree. Linnea taught in Emery, SD for four years, then moved to Pierre, where she taught until retirement in 1974.

Linnea loved sewing, crocheting, and quilting. She made quilts and afghans for all her family. Linnea loved gardening and took great pride in her flower gardens. She loved having the family home to bake and cook for, and always had a pot of soup on. Linnea was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pierre, where she loved sewing with the women when she was able. She was also a life member of Retired Teachers Association. Most of all, Linnea loved doing things with and for her family.

Linnea is survived by her children Mavis (Hector) Rojas of Pueblo, CO, Betty (Eldon) Lindquist of Pierre, Bryant (Carol) Burke of Tyndall, Steve (Nancy) Burke of Larimore, ND, Kathy Wells of Pierre, Colleen (Peter) Schumacher of Larimore, ND; 27 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Linnea was preceded in death by her husband Howard, daughter Adele Lillebo, son-in-law Don Wells, two infant babies, parents, and one sister.
