Ed and his spouse Blanche prchased and owned a 75 foot sailing yacht they named "Trojan" and they would take charters from San Pedro,Ca. to southern Mexican waters in their early years. These voyages were captained by Ed and were suspected of "RUM running", that is....ferrying illegal caches of prohibited alcohol and liquor during US prohibition from Mexico to Los Angeles where the illegal liquids would be distributed to the swilling masses.Ed was also supected of illegally transporting "one-armed bandits" (slot machines) for underworld types during this same time period but this was never confirmed. He apparently was never caught by the authorities.
He later worked undercover as an operative agent in the early years of J. Edgar Hoover's beginning F.B.I. during USA'S 1930's-1940's communist "RED SCARE" hunt, trying to infiltrate and unearth "suspected communists"(either real but mostly imagined)and in the 1950's obtained a coveted appointment as the Chief of Police of Northrup Aeronautical Industrial Corp. located in the desert of Lancaster, Ca. Ed was a heavy cigarette smoker and in his spare time was an avid model train railroader with a large "American Flyer" model railroad he built in a bedroom of his home in Los Angeles. Due to his smoking, he became a fragile man in his later years and he died at age 73 in L.A. area hospital of smoking related diseases and a heart attack. Grandfather to Christopher, Burke and Dana Bruttig of Atherton, Ca. and to Michael, Shannon and Burton Jr. of Long Beach, Ca.
Ed's inability for friendliness with people and lack of love and fun with his family members unfortunately means he was never really known nor cared about. He lived his life as a unemotional and controlling person. After his death in 1963, Ed was buried at New Calvary cemetery in L.A.
