Shirley was born in Tupper Lake, the daughter of Floyd and Hazel (Arnold) Burke on Oct. 10, 1937. She graduated from Tupper Lake High School. Following graduation she enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War.
Shirley made her home in Tupper Lake for many years. She worked for many years at the Swiss Kitchen. This is where she met the love of her life, Larry Bixby. Shirley and Larry were married March 16, 1985 and made their home in Sodus. She had most recently been employed at Gallos Quality Discount Store in Williamson.
Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and her spiritual community. If you knew her, you also know she was a wonderful cook and always made sure no one left her table hungry. She enjoyed reading, Skyping with her great grandchildren and following her grandchildren on Facebook. She embraced life and took it by the horns.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Larry Bixby; two daughters: Holly Russell and Tracye Snyder and her husband Tom of Tupper Lake; six grandchildren: Michael, Christine and James Russell, all of Tupper Lake, and Brandy Snyder Angell of Warwick R.I., Evan Snyder and Scott Snyder of Tupper Lake; and three great-grandchildren: Jennifer Russell, Ethan Angell and Mallory Snyder.
A calling hour is scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, followed by a service at 11 a.m. at Stuart-Fortune- Keough Funeral Home in Tupper Lake. Burial will be in St Alphonsus Cemetery.
