Verlia L. Brooks
Mrs. Verlia L. Brooks, 48, Number Four, died Tuesday, Dec. 23rd, at 3:46 p. m. in the Lewis County General hospital. The woman had been taken to the hospital two hours earlier when she was stricken with a heart attack in her husband's car on State street.
Mrs. Brooks and her husband had come to Lowville from Number Four to do some Christmas shopping. The car was parked in front of Schleider Coal office on State street and as she sat in the car waiting for her husband to return to the car ahe
suffered a heart attack. She attempted to call for help by honking the horn but failed to attract attention of passersby. Finally, someone
discovered Mrs. Brooks slumped in the front seat of the car. Dr. John Brooks was summoned and then the woman was taken to the hoepital in
the Virkler ambulance.
Mrs. Brooks was born in Ontario, Canada, July 12, 1904, daughter of John and Rhoda Morse Burleigh. She was married to Alton H. Brooks,
a forest fire observer at Number Four, about 17 years ago, in Watson.
Surviving besides her husband are a son by a former marriage, William Zickler, North Lake avenue, Albany; and three brothers, O. C.
Burleigh, Rome, Fred Burleigh, Albany, and, Chester Burleigh, Conora, Ont.
The body was taken to the Virkler funeral home where services were conducted iFriday at 2. p. m.
with Rev. Roger F. Williams, pastor of the Lowville Methodist church, officiating. Burial will be in Beaches Bridge cemetery in the spring.
