Marie Benisek passed away at the UC Davis Medical Center on the morning of August 27, 2014, surrounded by her husband, Bill Benisek; her daughter, Lisa Kelsey; her son, Eric Benisek; and her son-in-law, John Kelsey. Her passing followed a three-month illness.

Marie was born on November 25, 1937, in New York City to Sydney and Williamina Burnett and she attended school in Mount Vernon, N.Y. Following a move to Southern California in the 1950s, Marie completed her high school education at Baldwin Park High School. In 1960, Marie completed her registered nursing degree from Pasadena College.

While at college in Pasadena, CA she met her future husband, Bill, then a student at nearby Cal Tech. They were married on December 23, 1960, and the couple moved to New York City for a short time and then to Berkeley, CA where Bill continued his education while Marie worked as a nurse at a nearby hospital. Following Bill’s further research positions in New Haven, Conn., and Palo Alto, CA, Marie and Bill moved to Davis, CA in 1969 to settle in one spot for good and raise their family.

Once her children were old enough, Marie returned to nursing and worked as a nurse at Woodland Memorial Hospital and the Woodland Clinic for many years, retiring in 2001.

Marie was a longtime member of University Farm Circle, serving as its president in 1978-79, and more recently for several years as its corresponding secretary until shortly before her recent illness. She was dedicated to the goal of University Farm Circle to support female students at UC Davis through scholarships.

Marie’s other notable interests were gardening and gourmet cooking, for which she was widely known in Davis. Her cooking skills were recognized by an award in The Davis Enterprise Cooking Contest. She maintained additional interests in birding, hiking and fitness walking with a local Sierra Club group of walkers.

She is survived by her husband, Bill, of Davis, CA; daughter Lisa, of Arcata, CA; son Eric, of Lafayette, CA; sister Scotty, of San Juan Capistrano, CA; and brother Jim, of Laguna Niguel, CA; as well as her four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, Marie’s family invites you to make donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org) and/or to the Carol Lee Coss Memorial Scholarship administered by University Farm Circle, P.O. Box 858, Davis, CA 95617. Please add the notation to your check “Carol Lee Coss Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of Marie Benisek.”

A celebration of Marie’s life will be held in Davis, CA later this year.
