Alfred's biological father's last name was Tucker. The 1860 Calaveras County, California census list Alred as Alfred Tucker. His mother and biological father separated at some point during wagon train journey to California in 1851. His father reportedly returned to his home state of Arkansas. Alfred was raised by his stepfather James E Burnham and ended up taking the Burnham last name. I have found no evidence that Alfred was ever legally adopted or legally changed his name to Burnham.
