Dathan went to Garden Grove High School in SoCal where he was Junior Class President and played football and basketball. Upon graduation he went to Santa Ana College and became a Dons football player. He did his service in the US Army before becoming a City of Santa Ana Fireman. After 33 years and becoming Captain he retired and personally built his ranch house on the top of a hill in Fallbrook and developed a 10 acre avocado orchard. When he wasn't working the grove you would find Dathan on the golf course. Three days before his passing he was able to get in 18 holes. One of the highlights of his life was the day he got a hole in one (and second one a few years later). Throughout his life Dathan enjoyed outdoor activities such as surfing and snow skiing, handball and softball, camping, motorcycle trips and dirt biking in the desert.
Dathan is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons, Dayne, Jeff, Jason and Jeremy; daughters, Cindy Farber, Pam McCarver, Lisa Smith; step-son, John Barnes; step-daughter, Gail Meloni; brother, Wayne; sister, Pat DeMatteies; 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grand children.
His celebration of life will be held at Fairhaven Memorial Park, 1702 Fairhaven Ave, Santa Ana, CA 92705 on Saturday, February 2nd at 12:00 pm. FairhavenMemorial.com
He also was a member of the San Diego County Farm Bureau.
