Private First Class Burns was a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On October 18, 1952, after defending his position on Hill 598 against a determined enemy, he was evacuated through the 32nd Collecting Station to the 7th Medical Battalion, but never arrived. He was presumed dead on March 10, 1954. Private First Class Burns was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
