She was the daughter of Andrew and Anne (Klevrud) Haugen. She graduated from Beloit High School in June 1929, and was a resident of Orfordville for 75 years. Bessie married Harold Burtness in Orfordville on April 15, 1933. They celebrated 64 years of marriage before Harold's death in 1997. Bessie was a faithful and active member of the Orfordville Lutheran Church, serving as longtime treasurer of the Orfordville Lutheran Church Women. She was a member of the Ladies Aid, and worked for years on mission quilting. She and her husband Harold owned and operated Burtness Well Drilling until their retirement, which allowed time for their volunteer work. She enjoyed her family and friends, was an excellent seamstress, and enjoyed quilting. She passed away at the Hayward Nursing Home in Hayward, WI.
