Spring Grove (MN) Herald, 16 April 1896, page 4: "Died. Monday morning, April 6, 1896, at 10 o'clock, Lena, wife of P.P. Burtness, aged 28 years and 21 days. She had been in poor health for some time and for two weeks previous to her death had been very sick but hopes for her recovery were entertained until the morning of her demise. All that medical skill and loving care and attention could accomplish was done to stay the hand of death, but He who rules all things willed otherwise and Mrs. Burtness passed away last Monday morning. The heartfelt sympathy of everyone goes out to Mr. Burtness and his motherless child in this the saddest affliction of their lives. As a kind and loving wife and mother, friend and Christian worker, she was respected and loved by all who knew her. Mrs. Burtness was the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hanson. She was born in Cresco, Iowa, March 15, 1868; came to North Dakota with her parents 16 years ago, where she taught school in this county four years. She was married Sept. 17, 1890, and lived at Buttzville three years, when Mr. and Mrs. Burtness moved to this place where they have since resided. A daughter, Ruby five years old, besides her husband, her parents, three brothers and a sister are left to mourn her loss. Impressive services in Norwegian and English were held at the residence yesterday afternoon, conducted by Revs. Ressegger and Jahren, which were largely attended by friends of the deceased, after which the remains were laid to rest in St. Olaf Cemetery. - Ramson Co., (N.D.) Independence."
