He resided in Monroe County, New York prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army on July 25, 1942 in Rochester, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Financial Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.
B-24J "Taloa" #44-40716 took off with other B-24's from Yontan Airfield on Okinawa on a bombing mission to strike the Japanese Battleship Haruna docked in the Kure Harbor in Hiroshima Bay, Japan. Kure Habor was known by the Japanese as the Imperial Navy's Harbor.
Their bombing mission was successful and the Haruna was sunk in the harbor. B-24J #44-40716 was, however, hit multiple times by ground anti-aircraft flak and ended up crashing just north of Kure Harbor. Eyewitness saw at least two parachutes leaving the B-24 before it crashed.
Five of the crew members survived the crash and became POW's. They were Captain Marvin, 1st Lt. Flanagan, 2nd Lt. Johnson, S/Sgt Baumgartner and S/Sgt Molnar.
2nd Lt. Johnson was taken to the Tokyo POW Camp and survived the war. He was the only member of the crew that survived the war.
Capt. Marvin and 1st Lt. Flanagan both died on the day of the crash possibly from wounds received in the crash.
S/Sgt's Baumgartner & Molnar were taken to the Chugoku Military Police Headquarters Kempi Tai in Hiroshima. They both died on August 6, 1945 when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
T/Sgt David A. Bushfield was "Killed In Action" in the above noted crash during the war.
