Guadalupe (Nana Lupe) Bustamante Alvarez

longtime resident of Tucson, age 91, passed away at her home on Sunday, December 9, 2001, after a short illness. Lupe was born in Cananea, Mexico, and moved to Tucson in 1920. She attended Davis Elementary School, and was employed as a child care worker for the Baffert family. During the depression, she met her husband, Faustino. They were married in Tucson, in 1930, enjoying 37 years of marriage prior to his death. They were proud parents of five children. Lupe as a homemaker was also involved in her children’s education, volunteering for school activities, and elected as President of the Carrillo school P.T.A. Along with these responsibilities, she attended citizenship and English classes. One week after Faustino’s death, she took her citizenship test, and became a naturalized U.S. Citizen. Her natural talent as a seamstress enabled her to become an instructor for com- munity school classes, and a day care provider in her home for working mothers. Nana Lupe, will be truly missed by all who were touched by her many acts of kindness, her thought- fulness, her supportive nature, and her resiliency throughout her lifetime. She was preceded in death by her daughters, Connie Armenta and Guadalupe (Pupie) Lopez; her son-inlaw, Edward Lopez; and two grand- children, Elizabeth Lopez and Carolyn Rivera. She is survived by her sons, Faustino (Gloria) Alvarez, Dennis (Clara) Alvarez; and daughter, Delfina Alvarez; and her sister, Bertha B. Rico. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and in-laws. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 13, 2001 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY, South Chapel, 240 S. Stone Ave., with a rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 14, 2001 at 8:30 a.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral. Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery.
