Mary Emeline Butler was the daughter of Isaac Butler and his second wife Tabitha Jane Tucker* (1860, 1870 US Census). Her parents traveled to Oregon from Missouri in 1845 to become some of the first settlers in the area of Portland. She married (1) Ransom Roscoe Staples at Hillsboro, Oregon, December 25, 1870. She accompanied her husband to California, living first in Nevada County and later in Los Angeles County (1880 US Census). Mary and Ransom apparently were divorced by 1892, since she married (2) Henry Edmund Berjiman at Chino, San Bernardino County, California, November 8, 1892. Mary and her second husband were long time residents at Chino (1900, 1910, and 1920 US Census).

* Her father, Isaac Butler, married (1) Jerusha Fields in Missouri in 1842. Isaac and Jerusha had no children. In 1845 Isaac left Missouri bound for Oregon with his second wife, Tabitha Tucker (see: File 5322, Oregon Territorial and Provisional Papers, dated January 13, 1854, "an act to legalize the marriage of Isaac and Tabitha Butler" by the dissolution of his first marriage to Jerusha).
