Johnnie Butler Blanding
Wife, mother, and educator, Johnnie Butler Blanding of San Francisco passed away June 3, 2010 at the age of 68. She was born December 1, 1941 in Greenville, South Carolina to John and Nellie Butler. Johnnie graduated from Sterling High School and received a Bachelor's Degree in French from Johnson C. Smith University in 1963. She was married to James F. Blanding in 1976.
Johnnie was a high school French teacher until her relocation to San Francisco in 1976 and was passionate about making a difference in the lives of her students. During her time at Wade Hampton High School she rose to the head of the foreign languages department despite the obstacles of prejudice in her path. In San Francisco, she was active at Providence Baptist Church as a Sunday School teacher and Deacon's wife. She devoted her life to her family and was active in the family business, Bayview Property Managers. She enjoyed playing the piano, reading, and gardening.
She is survived by her husband James, son James R., daughter Cristen, stepdaughter April, grandchildren Jordyn, Christen and Thierry, and great-grandson Gein, all of San Francisco.
A wake will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Duggan's Funeral Services. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Providence Baptist Church.
