Lorene M. Byron, 94, born in 1910 in Peoria, Ill. Moved with her family to Portland, Ore. in 1920, where she developed her lifelong love of hiking and developed her many secretarial skills in The Public Schools there, that she used throughout her life. She met her husband of 48 years LtJg. James T. Byron, USN, in Portland in 1935. The Navy brought them to San Diego for good in 1942, where they raised four daughters.

Mr. Byron retired as a purchasing agent for the City of San Diego, where his last major purchase were the lights for Qualcom Stadium. Lorene retired after a 15 year employment for the County of San Diego, first at the San Diego County Sheriff's Dept. and lastly, from the General Services office located then on Ruffin Rd.

She continued to volunteer her secretarial skills to the county and was awarded one of the County's Volunteer's of the Year in the early 1980s. She and Mr. Byron were active members of the Gideon's organization for many years together, helping to place many Bibles throughout the San Diego area. They also were members of the S.D. Trailer Club and shared a love of bowling.

They were active at Lincoln Acres Community Church and the South Bay Bible Community Church, both of National City. They both volunteered their skills to the Billy Graham Crusade when it was held in San Diego in the 1970s. They both together worked to develop the San Diego Rescue Mission, Pine Valley Bible Conference in Pine Valley, Ca. and Connor Beach Bible Conference in Connor Beach, Ore.

After Mr. Byron's death in 1983, she was active at Calvary Baptist Church and later at Grace Bible Fellowship, both of National City, Ca. She continued to volunteer her secretarial skills to Mission to Catholics International in San Diego.

She also learned to do medical transcribing out of her home and was a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer in National City. She helped support numerous Christian courses, including Friends of Israel, Christian Heritage College and Linda Vista Bible College and Seminary, both of El Cajon. She was an active bowler in The "200" Club and Admiral Robinson Senior bowlers until just months before her death.

Lorene is survived by four daughters: Kira Bauman of National City, Emalee Sweeney of Hillsboro, Ore, Patricia Clayton of San Diego, Donna Knight of El Cajon, four grandsons Kelley Cowing of Beaverton, Ore, Craig Cowing of Hillsboro, Ore, Lance Clayton of San Diego, John Knight of El Cajon, one granddaughter, Mary Renot of Gulfport, MS, two great-granddaughters: Luci and Layla Renot, one great-grandson, Leo Cowing, one cousin, Lucille Howe of Long Beach, Ca, one nephew Raymond Boerckel of Lincoln City, Ore, one niece, Kathie Person of Portland, Ore.

She was a shining example to all who knew her, of what God can accomplish through a life totally dedicated to sharing the "Good News" of salvation God offers to all mankind through his son Jesus Christ.

In lieu of flowers at Lorene's request, tax-deductable donations may be made in her memory to: The Gideons, P.O. Box 121376, Chula Vista, Ca 91912. She was interred at La Vista Memorial Park in National City, Ca. on June 22, 2005 with Gideon's and pastor's Shinn and Obero officiating. Arrangements were under the supervision of Heath Mortuary in National City. A "Celebration of Life" service will follow at a later date. Published in U-T San Diego on June 23, 2005
