Lois Evelyn Caine Ball, age 92, passed away at her home in Florence on Sunday, June 9, 2013. She was born November 27, 1920, in Spokane, WA.

She lived in many places while traveling with her brother (Oscar) and mother (Alice). She was part of the greatest generation and grew up during the Great Depression of the 1930s.

She met her companion of 73 years, Roscoe Ball, in Cave Junction, Oregon. Lois and Roscoe were married in Reno, Nevada on November 23, 1940 and resided in Riddle, Oregon where they raised their three boys.

In 1994 they moved to Florence and continued to receive visits from friends and family. She will be remembered for her sense of humor and quick wit. She was very talented in arts and crafts, needlepoint, afghans, pottery and cake decorating. She provided many beautifully decorated tier cakes for all occasions. Her handwritten letters will be missed by her boys along with her telephone message, “Its Mom, all is well here! Just wanted to talk!” Her greeting as we walked in the door, “Are you hungry?!”

She was a member of the Mistletoe Chapter 114 (Order of the Eastern Star) and served as its Worthy Patron in 1953. She was appointed to a four year term to the Douglas County Library Board. She worked at many jobs during her younger years. Lois worked as a secretary for the Riddle School District and also drove the “Big” bus. She left the school to become the Postmaster of Riddle. She finished her working career at Roseburg Lumber products and was a long time member of the L u m b e r and Sawmill Workers Union # 2949. She was honored as a Princess of the Canyonville Pioneer Days.

Lois and Roscoe spent their early retirement years traveling and enjoying their expanding family.

She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Roscoe; and her three boys: Jim; Jack; Jay; and Mary Lou, her daughter for 50 years. They were all with her as she passed. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Riddle first Baptist Church, Thursday, June 13, 2013 at noon.
