The family immigrated to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1911. Albert was working as a grocery clerk when he enlisted on Aug. 11, 1915 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He indicated he had served one year with the 105th Fusiliers.


His brother Sgt. Hugh Cairns (Victoria Cross recipient) served in the same regiment and died of wounds on Nov 2, 1918. Another brother Henry Cairns also served in WWI and made it home safely.
