Melba Calder Allred, age 78, was born Dec. 13, 1923 in Vernal to Wallace and May Hacking Calder. She was the middle child of seven children. Hers was a loving, close family and she was good friends with her brothers and her sister Helen. He sister, Neva, only lived a few hours. Melba loved school and was active in Uintah High School social life and school government. She married her sweetheart, Charles Allred, for eternity on Sept. 15, 1943 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They had six children. They also have a foster daughter, Geverne Johnson Begay, who is part of their family and loved as a sister. Melba and Charlie were successful business people and are best known for starting and running the Hobby Shop in Vernal in 1959. It was a favorite for kids and hobbyists for 13 years when they bought the Garden Gate Floral and the two businesses were merged. In 1982 Melba and Charlie served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Atlanta, Ga. This was a treat for Melba as her first love, after her family, was serving in the church. She had a strong testimony of it and served in many capacities including: Relief Society president, Young Women president, Primary president, and always in the music as organist and chorister. She and Charlie also served a mission to the Randlett Branch, and cherish the many friends they made there. She loved music and a family sing a long was always her favorite time. She sang with her mother and brother, Carl, at many funerals.
Melba is survived by her husband Charlie, and her children: Miriam and Darrell Buhanan, Huntsill, Texas; Larry and Dorene Allred, Vernal; John and Patty Allred, Lapoint; Terry and Mickie Allred, Vernal; Glade and Valynn Allred, Vernal; Rick C. Allred, Palm Springs, Calif.; and Geverne Begay, Tuba City, Ariz. She is also survived by 41 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and her brothers: Earl and Afton Calder, Vernal; Paul and Gerrie Calder, Grand Junction, Colo. And Glade and Arlene Calder, Vernal. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Neldon and Lloyd, and sisters, Helen and Neva.
Funeral services were held June 6 at the Vernal 2nd and 4th Ward Chapel with Bishop Ray Martinsen officiating. Ben Allred offered the family prayer. The congregation sang the opening hymn "Abide With Me." Glad Calder offered the invocation. Speakers were Terry Allred, who also read the obituary, Glade Allred, John Allred and Larry Allred. Larry and Dorene Allred performed the musical number "Come Ye Disconsolate." Larry, John, Terry and Glade performed the musical number "How Great Thou Art." The congregation sang the closing hymn "I Am A Child Of God." Earl Calder offered the benediction.
