James, and brother John, were weavers in Paisley. They emigrated in 1827 and he settled in Lachute, on the bank of the North River, on land later owned by James Pollock and his family. Seven years later he moved to Mount Maple, in Chatham, and bought 200 acres of 'wild land', Lot 20, Range 8.

James Calder died at Mount Maple (Quebec) March 16, 1896 aged 65 years, 10 months. Buried March 18, 1896. Witnesses: Alexander Calder and Arthur Tomalty.
