Grace Calvin Allison, local historian, is remembered

Whenever anyone has a historical question about Niles, most people are often referred to the writings of Grace Calvin Allison, a noted local historian who wrote several books about Niles and area history.

Allison, 83, died Nov 8. at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa Prior to moving to Mitchellville, Iowa. Allison lived in the area for over 30 years where she was a freelance writer for area newspapers, primarily The Niles Daily Times.

Allison was born Aug 28, 1921 in Cortland, the eldest daughter of Arthur L Calvin and Malvina Edwards Calvin.

She graduated from Cham­pion High School in 1939 and attended Warren Business College and Choffin Voca­tional School for Traffic and Transportation for two years.

For three years, she wrote the column, "Living Histories," for the Tribune Chronicle, and for over 20 years the column, "Dustin* the Cobwebs," for The Niles Times. Several of her columns have been published into book form by the Niles Historical Society.

In addition to her weekly columns, Allison also wrote several books on local and area history and was published in the Western Reserve Magazine in Garrettsville She was a longtime member of the Trumbull County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society and the Niles Historical Society. She served as Niles' official historian for 15 years and was a member of the historical society's board of directors.

"I remember her as a diligent researcher," said Laura Casey, assistant director of the Niles McKinley Memorial Library. "She often used past issues of The Niles Times as a resource, often spending hours at the microfilm reader looking things up. She was a very sweet lady."

Allison retired to Iowa to be near her family and was a member of the Mitchellville Disciples of Christ Church.

In addition to "Dustin' the Cobwebs." other publi­cations by Allison on record at the library include "19th Century Voices of Trumbull County, Ohio," a collection of articles on the history of Niles and a list of additional resources compiled by the Niles Historical Society "Covered Bridges of Niles and Trumbull County, Ohio." Heaton's Town Niles, Trumbull County. Ohio." "Howland, the high land of Trumbull County, Ohio a history and manual or intermediate students;" and "Police chiefs who guided 'the boys in blue' in Niles, Ohio 1900-1998"

Allison was still writing up until her death Referring to one of her favorite publications. "A History of the United States of America." by Frederick Butler A M and published in 1826, Allison recently wrote about the presidential election campaign of 2004, "Can you hear our ancestors, who dedicated their lives to make our nation special? If we listen carefully I imagine that we would hear them as they are shaking in their graves by stomping their feet and rolling their heads in disapproval. Why? Because of the abandonment of moral virtues by so many of the citizens of our once great nation."

Allison is survived by four children, David Nolan of Danville. Ill, Lloyd Nolan of Warren. Arthur Nolan of Mitchellville Iowa, and Sharon Azecuskv of Chappells SC four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Her second husband Thomas P Allison Jr. died in 1994 and a son Joseph Michael Nolan died in 1983.

With selections of hymns, in the Garden." and "The Old Rugged Cross," a service was held at the Mitchellville Christian Church in Iowa on Nov 10 with Pastor Amy Spangler-Dunning officiating Allison was laid to rest at the Hillside Cemetery Chapel in Cortland on Nov. 13 with the Rev. Larry Silvas officiating at the graveside service.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Iowa Center for the Blind.

Arrangements in Mitchellville were handled by the Hamilton's Mitchellville Funeral Home. Local arrangements were handled by the Reese-Wynn-Winyard-McDermott-Laird Funeral Home.
