Campbell joined the 42nd as Lieutenant in 1791. He was promoted Captain in 1795 and wounded in Egypt in 1801. By 1803 he was promoted Major.
Died in Plymouth of wounds 'received in Spain', 27th January 1809.

Major ARCHd ARGYLE CAMPBELL
Who During 24 years Service
Was an Ornament to His Profession
and to the 42nd Regt.
By the Officers and Soldiers
of Which He Was Regarded
As A Brother and A Father
In Him Were United
the Heroick Virtues of the Military Character
With Those Benevolent
and Amiable Dispositions
Which Excited General Esteem and Admiration.
The Hardship of War Undermined His Constitution
But Did Not Subdue His Spirit.
He Finished His Military Career
in the Spanish Peninsula
Fighting For the Oppressed
and Having Distinguished Himself
in Battle of Corunna on the 16th
Died at Plymouth
On the 27th January 1809
Aged 40 years
