Born October 5, 1914, at Traveler's Rest, originally the home of Revolutionary War General Horatio Gates near Shepherdstown, W. Va., she was the sixth and youngest child of the late John Thomas and Rebecca Strider Campbell. She and her late husband, John Franklin Ambrose, raised apples and Angus show cattle on their farm, Paignton, between Shepherdstown and Charles Town, W. Va., for over 30 years. She graduated from Charles Town High School and attended Shepherd University. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Shepherdstown, and was active with the Episcopal Church Women. Mrs. Ambrose gave generously of her time and resources to civic and cultural causes. Charles Town General and Jefferson Memorial hospitals recognized her for over 800 hours of volunteer work. She held membership in the auxiliaries of both hospitals, and she furnished an emergency room at Jefferson Memorial in memory of her son John Campbell Ambrose. She was a member of the Old Opera House Theatre; the Jefferson County Historical Society; a charter member of both the Bee Line Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Lawson Botts Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy; and a life member of the Jefferson County Fair Association.
