Barbara Ann Armstrong, age 81, of Spring Lake, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2008, at her home. She was born December 12, 1926, in Grand Rapids, to Don and Margaurite (Pyman) Canfield. She married Charles "Charlie" Armstrong on October 10, 1946, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lowell. Mrs. Armstrong moved to Spring Lake in 1988 and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spring Lake. She was one of the original "Rosie the Riveters," and she also worked as a telegraph operator during World War II for Western Union in Grand Rapids and Chicago. The most important and rewarding aspect of her life was her family. Survivors include her loving husband, Charles "Charlie" Armstrong; her beloved children, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, three brothers, numerous nieces and nephews, dear friend, and special neighbors, . She was preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter, Jacqueline Armstrong in 1994; a sister, Catherine Canfield; and a half-sister and half-brother, Arlene Dart and Wayne Canfield. The funeral liturgy for Barbara will be held April 2, 2008, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spring Lake with Rev. Leonard Sudlik as celebrant. Friends may meet the family Tuesday, April 1, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Spring Lake and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Additional services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2008, at the Roth-Gerst Funeral Home, with visitation two hours prior to the service, from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in Findlay Cemetery in Ada Township, Kent County. Memorial contributions in Barbara's name may be made to Hospice of North Ottawa Community.
