Mary Ann Foster
Nov. 28, 1915 — June 8, 2016

Mary Ann Foster was born Mary Ann Canova in Weed, California, to Anselmo and Amalia Canova. The family moved to Solano County in the early 1920s. This would remain her home for her entire life. She lived in Thomasson, Suisun City, Fairfield, Vallejo and finally, in Vacaville. She attended Green Valley Grammar School and graduated from Armijo High School with the class of 1935. Mary was devoted to her family and church and was an eager participant in all their activities. Her Italian heritage was especially celebrated with Italian being her first language.

Mary was a devout Catholic and served the church by teaching Sunday school and singing in the choir; first at St. Alphonse Catholic Church in Suisun, later at Holy Spirit Parish in Fairfield and ultimately she was an active member of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church in Vallejo.

She began her career in government service during World War II at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. She began in the typing pool in 1942 and retired from payroll 30 years later. She could always be counted on to support social activities at the yard. Volunteering was second nature to her. She was a member of the American Red Cross Motor Corps and would drive ambulatory patients at Mare Island Hospital to social outings to assist their rehabilitation. It was through this activity that she met her future husband. She was also a hostess at the Fairfield/Suisun Air Force Base USO Canteen, serving food and dancing with the GI’s. Her patriotism was unbounded.

She married Richard Foster in 1955. Both being employed at Mare Island, they established their home in Vallejo. They enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling throughout the western United States. They were regular supporters of Hogan High School sport and music programs. Gardening, pets, family dinners and their neighbors’ friendship were also highly prized. They were faithful 49er season ticketholders starting in the ’50s.

Mary was widowed in 1989 after 34 years of marriage. Her active life continued at church, as a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, and with extensive traveling. She took numerous tours to Europe and explored various locations in the U.S. Visiting the birthplaces of her parents in Italy and celebrating Easter Mass at the Tempio de Canova with family would be highlights. Mary enjoyed meeting people and easily made friends on these trips. To meet her was to love her.

Mary was predeceased by her brother, John Canova. She is survived by her brother, Andy Canova; nephews, Randy Canova and John Canova Jr.; cousins, Angelina King and Guido Colla.

Mary will be sorely missed, but she leaves a legacy of love, devotion, generosity and service to her family, country, neighbors and friends. In later years, bound to a wheelchair and asked how she was doing, she would always answer “Beautiful.” This is how she approached life and her memory will remain an inspiration to us all.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. on June 22, 2016, at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, 1850 W. Texas St., Fairfield, California. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on June 23, 2016, at Holy Spirit Parish, 1050 N. Texas St., Fairfield, California. Committal to follow Funeral Mass at Fairmont Memorial Park, 1901 Union Ave., Fairfield, California.

Arrangements under the care of Bryan-Braker, 707-425-4697.
