On this day, February 16th. 1958, 60 years ago Carval Asbury Cary breathed his last breath. He was the father of 7 children: Janice, Herbert, Ann, Anthony, Marie, Sandra and Ronnie. Carval was married to Annie Ruth Maddox Cary. He was the son of Golokus "Dude" Asbury and Clara Belle Jordan Cary. He had one brother, W.L. Carey and a sister, Inez Carey Phillips. Carval did not die of natural causes, but was shot twice in the back of the head on a cold winter's night on Hwy. 29 in Royston, Georgia. He was a business man owning a saw mill employing men from Franklin and surrounding counties. On that night in 1958, my mother lost her husband, seven children lost their father. Two of those children lost any memory of him. People told me that,"He was a good man and would give you the shirt off his back". My brother, Ronnie now lives where his saw mill was located. Carval was killed with a gun in the hand of a person who I consider knew right from wrong, and on that night decided to play God and thus alter the lives of many people including his own family. As long as I live I will not let the life and memory of my father, Carval Carey, 1919-1958, be forgotten.
