Eva M. Carey, 89, of Cheyenne passed away Sept. 28 at Davis Hospice in Cheyenne.
She was born Sept. 18, 1919, in Artesia, N.M., and had lived here most of her life.
Eva married Sgt. Charles F. Carey Jr. of the U.S. Army, 379th Infantry, 100th Infantry Division in Cheyenne in 1937.
He was killed in combat in Rimling, France, and earned the Purple Heart, the Congressional Medal of Honor and the U.S. Army Medal of Commendation and Distinguished Service Cross during World War II. He is buried in Ardennes American Military Cemetery in Belgium.
Mrs. Carey remained widowed and is survived by her two sons, Richard Carey of Los Angles and Ronald Kenneth Carey of Salt Lake City; three nephews, Steve Rodriguez and wife, Sylvania, Benjamin Lewis Rodriguez and wife, Jean, Robert Allen Rodriguez and wife, Dorothy, all of Cheyenne; grandchildren, Robert Allen Carey, Christina Fay Cruz, Sarah Ann Carey, Talia D'Amato-Carey and Christina Ricke; and five great-grandchildren.
Eva was employed by the Laramie County Library in the circulation department for many years.
She was known as the "matriarch" of stability and was always there for family and friends. Her pride was always reflected by her home, her surroundings and her doing of things for herself. Her personal passion was her yard, which consisted of a luscious green lawn and afforded her many hours of conversation with friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Allen Carey; her parents, Ramon and Amelia Mendoza; two brothers, Adam Mendoza and Benjamin Mendoza; and sister, Aurora "Dora" Rodriguez.
