Jean Carlin Baty, 97, died peacefully at her home in Lynchburg, Va., on April 23, 2014.

Born in Racine, on Dec. 12, 1916, she was the daughter of Myrtle Jane and Fred Benton Carlin of Racine. She was the second oldest of eight children and the oldest daughter. She grew up on the original Carlin Homestead.

Jean married the love of her life, Arthur Nicolas Baty II, and was happily married until his death in 1997.

She was also predeceased by her siblings Larson Emry Carlin, Fred Herbert Carlin, Dorothy Eloa Carlin and Lillys Carlin Brock.

Jean was a trailblazer for women in her time, leaving the family farm in her late teens and moving to California where she worked as a seamstress for dressmakers to the stars of the silver screen.

She purchased Movieland Tie Shop in Hollywood. As a woman, Jean was a minority in the business community and many of her proudest moments came as a result of working hard to make her business a success. She was well respected by her customers and had clients all over the world due to her love of people, creativity, financial savvy and expectations of excellence. She owned and successfully operated her business for more than 50 years before she retired.

In her retirement, she lived in Missouri and Lake Elsinore, Calif., with her nephew and brother respectively. For the last year of her life, Jean lived with her niece and nephew-in-law in Lynchburg.

Jean was loved and was encouraging to every person she met. Jean had a love for flowers, a love of family and children and she always looked for the beauty in nature. She had a quest for knowledge and sought to understand the world around her each and every day of her life. She inspired all who knew her. She will be forever loved and missed by her family.

The family will host a graveside service at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at Burkhart Cemetery.
