He came to Norfolk in 1909 and served in the Navy during World War I. After the war he lived in New York from 1919 to 1925. Returning to Norfolk in 1925 he joined the advertising staff of the Ledger Dispatch and retired from the Ledger-Star and The Virginian Pilot advertising staff Jan. 1, 1957 after 31 years.
A baritone, he sang solos at scores of churches in this area.
Besides his widow, he is survived by a son, John E. Carr and two grandsons, John E. Carr II and Douglas Mitchell Carr of Hampton.
