Betty Atkins July 1 1923 - April 14 2014 Betty ("Edith Elizabeth") Atkins passed away peacefully at the age of 90 years, on April 14, 2014 at her home in Vancouver after her brave fight with dementia and cancer. Betty is now reunited with her predeceased husband, Richard Lloyd Atkins.

Betty was born on July 1, 1923 to Reginald Share Carré (1874-1949) and Laura Jack Mosher (1889-1988) in a small summering cabin on Last Mountain. Shortly after the birth, the family was forced to move to their Glenrosa homestead closer to Lake Okanogan due to concerns with wild bears. They were early settlers in Glenrosa area of Westbank (now renamed West Kelowna) on their family homestead located near Carré Road. Betty is survived by her brother Hilary Carré and Betty's four children Nancy (Cam Cleveland, Richard, Laura), Grant (Scarlett McGladery Sam, John, Luke, Kevin), Janice (David Mende, Michaela, Isabella), and Dean (Lorraine Atkins, Brittany, Alysha).

Betty married Richard (August 31, 1923 to January 10, 2012) on July 31, 1954; the pair were meant for each other from encounters as early as the age of seven in Glenrosa where Richard summered with his Aunt Honor. Betty graduated as a registered nurse from Kelowna General Hospital, and moved to the coast to subsequently work at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster and later, Saint Vincents Hospital in Vancouver. She retired from nursing to bring up a family in Vancouver. After her own children were raised and gone, she spent much of the last twenty years of life immersed in her many well loved grand children.

Betty and husband Richard spent a lifetime in love and as close companions and would have been celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this summer. They lead active lives traveling the world and spent summers at the family summer home on the sunshine coast in Bargain Bay, B.C. they also made annual trips to visit family and friends in Kelowna and Westbank.

Betty's life accomplishments centered around her service to others, not only through her work as a registered nurse, but especially in support of both family and church. Betty was active in her religious community at Granville Chapel and was an active member of their women's DORCAS Group that encompassed bible study and organized charitable acts for the poor. Giving of herself defined every day of her life and set a rare example of total selflessness and a duty to care for all she came in contact with. Her giving nature supported, nourished, and developed her children, grandchildren, family, and friends instilling pillars of religion, and a consciousness of caring for others. From the perspective of her children, there was not a day when she was not there in every capacity imaginable for each and every one of us, providing a perfect upbringing.

Her children were honoured to experience Betty's last hours together as a family to watch her spirit soar on the wings of angels in the early hours of April 14. Even as Betty has left this world, we are overwhelmed by her lifetime of giving - a legacy that now forms part of us all.

A funeral and reception at Granville Chapel (Granville Street at 43rd Avenue in Vancouver) will occur at 2:00 pm on Thursday, April 17, 2014. In lieu of flowers, donations accepted to either of Betty's long-supported charities of the Union Gospel Mission www.ugm.ca or DORCAS Women's Group - Granville Chapel / Vancouver.
