Mary Alice Acklen, 79, of Buchanan Dam passed away on Oct. 12 after a short battle with liver cancer. A memorial service celebrating Mary Alice's life and her faith will be held on Friday, Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. at the Highland Lakes United Methodist Church of Buchanan Dam, Texas. Reverend Grady Roe will be officiating.

Mary Alice was born on Aug. 13, 1931 in Needham, Mass. to the late Walter and Mary Carre. She was a teacher in Houston for over 25 years. She retired in 1985 and she and her husband, Jim Acklen, moved to Lake Buchanan when he retired in 1991. She was a member of the Highland Lakes United Methodist Church. She was Chairman of the Outreach committee and coordinated the Meals on Wheels and food pantry activity for a number of years. She was also involved in many other church programs and activities. She has been very active in the Country Cuzzins square dance club for over 15 years. She was part of the original group that worked to acquire and convert a rental duplex at the entrance at the entrance to Greenwood Acres into a library. It is now a branch library in a new building. She was the social chairman for Greenwood P.O.A. for over 10 years and did the planning for picnics and parades throughout the year. She was also very active in the local Retired Teachers Association. She received the annual award from the Texas Daughters of the American Revolution in 2005 for her dedication volunteerism to her community. She will be truly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Jim Acklen. Her sons, Andy MacLaren and wife Dana of Austin, Walter MacLaren and wife Dianna of Orlando, Florida, step daughter Linda Acklen Minjares of Blanco, step son David Acklen and wife Tammy of San Antonio, step son Jeff Acklen and wife Laura of Austin, and nine grandchildren.
