María Tomasa Francisca Emigdia Carrillo y Ortega was born at Santa Bárbara, Alta
California, México, on August 4, 1830, and baptized in the Presidio Chapel later
that same day (BP Baptism 00881). She was the daughter of José Gertrudis Carmelo
Carrillo y Castro and Catarina Manuela Ortega y López. Five years after the
death of her aunt, María Antonia Carrillo y Castro de Burton in 1843, Tomasa
married her aunt's widowed husband, Lewis T. Burton, on June 25, 1848. Tomasa
died at Santa Bárbara on April 8, 1851, and was buried in the Mission Cemetery
on April 10.
