CARTER, CALVIN JAMES: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

Deceased Name: CARTER, CALVIN JAMES
Calvin James Carter was born to Thomas McKinley and Ella Mae Carter on December 26, 1929 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was the fifth of eight children. Calvin accepted Christ at an early age at Vernon AME Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As a youth Calvin was very active in church, attending Sunday school, going to church and participating in church programs. One memorable program, Calvin played the preacher in A Tom Thumb Wedding. The family moved to San Diego, California in 1939, where they made Logan Temple AME Zion Church their new church home. To this day, Carter family members still attend Logan Temple AME. Calvin received his formal education in San Diego. He attended Logan Elementary, Stockton Junior High and graduated from San Diego High School in 1948. He went on to further his education at San Diego State from 1948 to 1950, majoring in engineering. Calvin enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1951 to 1953. He was a corporal, and a guided missile electrical specialist. Calvin met and married Helen Mae Moore and to this union, one child was born, Craig Calvin Carter. In 1953, Calvin went to work for General Dynamics as an electronics technician, where he spent 39 years before retiring. In 1972, Calvin attended contractors trade school and received his license. He went on to build two houses, purchased several properties and remodeling them for rentals. From 1990 to 2002, Calvin began a hobby of running a stall at the Spring Valley Swap Meet selling baseball caps. In 2004, Calvin's health began to decline. He stayed with his sister Elouise and her husband Allen for a short period of time. He then returned to his home where his sister JoAnn and husband William became his full-time caregivers, while brother Thomas and his wife Rose took over Calvin's business affairs. In 2008, Calvin's health declined to a level where he was placed in a nursing home. On March 14, 2012, at 1:15 a.m., Calvin passed away in his sleep at Chase Care Center. He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas McKinley and Ella Mae Carter, as well as two sisters, Juanita Fennell and Rosa Lee Green. Calvin is survived by one son, Craig C. Carter (Phyllis); one brother, Thomas M. Carter, Jr. (Rose); four sisters, Elouise Thomas (James Allen), Olga Carter-Thomas, Julietta Martin and JoAnn Smith (William L.); two grandchildren, Brian C. Carter (Brandy) and Blake C. Carter; one great-grandchild, Peyton Elizabeth Carter; a loving cousin, Louise Nobel as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Calvin's positive attitude on life was a great influence on his family members. He was a mentor, role model and an inspiration. The family is so proud of all of Calvin's accomplishments. Calvin leaves a legacy for his family to love and cherish. He will truly be missed.
