Raymond Carter (Capoccioni)
March 26, 1921 – December 4, 2015

Raymond Carter, age 94, died Friday, December 4, 2015 at St. Lucie Hospice House. He enjoyed a long and happy marriage to Dolores, who predeceased him in 2003. Ray was a devoted and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Ray is survived by two children: Robert and Diane. He also leaves behind four grandchildren: Rachael, Danielle, Michelle, and Sean, and two great-grandchildren: Harper and Evan. He is also survived by his sister Evelyn Artkowsky of Natrona Heights, PA.

Ray was born in Tarentum, PA to Margaret and Peter Capoccioni. Ray attended University of Pittsburgh on the GI bill, earning a degree in Business Administration. He sold everything under the sun before finally settling into a career in Reservations with Eastern Airlines in Miami, FL where he retired after 29 years. His success in business can be directly attributed to his work ethic and his natural ability to talk to people. His attention to detail was legendary. He took pride in the fact that he always left his customers satisfied.

Ray is a veteran of World War II, where he served for three years as a Sargent in the Army with Company A, 899th Tank Destroyer Battalion in the European Theatre. Ray's distinctions include aiding with the landing of soldiers on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was wounded and received other commendations for his dedication and bravery including a Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, a Presidential Unit Citation, a Bronze Arrowhead, seven Campaign Stars and the French Legion of Honor. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Army never left him, as friends and family will attest.

Ray was very active in various local organizations including the Port Saint Lucie Crime Watch, a Charter and Executive Board Member of the American Legion Post 355, the Elks Lodge 2658, and Commander of DAV Post 113 for two terms. In addition, he was one of the seven organizers for the Purple Heart Memorial in Veterans Memorial Park. In the last few years, and to him one of his greatest accomplishments, Ray participated in reaching over 15,000 students in St. Lucie County schools with assemblies and classroom visits sharing his patriotism and love for our country.

Friends and family are invited to attend a viewing on Wednesday, December 9th, from 4-7pm at Aycock Funeral Home. There will also be a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, December 10th, at 11:00 AM at St. Lucie Catholic Church, in Port St. Lucie followed by interment at Forest Hills Memorial Park. Afterward, a Celebration of Life will be held at the Elks Lodge 2658.

Memorial contributions in Ray's honor may be made to the American Legion Post 355 P.O. Box 880427, Port Saint Lucie, FL 34988.
