Dorothea Carter 92 Operated Pet Store By Michelle Quinn staff warm Dorothea Carter of Jensen Fla an animal lover who formerly lived in Smithtown died Tuesday at the age of 92 In Smithtown Mrs Carter worked as a volunteer for the local Republican Party in the late 1940s During World War H she sewed uniforms for servicemen at a military installation in Lake Ronkonkoma that was part of the Long Island Coastal Defense System Mrs Carter was bom in Germany and came to the United States when she was 12 Her parents were Mr and Mrs Adolph Harnisch owners of a meat market in Smithtown which was across the street from town hall Mrs Carter was predeceased by her husband Jack who owned and operated Carters Diner in Smithtown in the 1940s Mrs Carter raised parakeets parrots peacocks cockatiels monkeys dogs cats and otters Fran 19S4 to I960 she owned and operated a pet store at her Florida home "She loved all kinds of animals" said her daughter Mary Papsidero of Jensen Beach Fla Mrs Carter's survivors span four generations In addition to Papsidero they include three sons Henry Link of Quincy Fla Robert Link of Coram and James Link of St James two daughters Dorothea Kammerer of St James and Jensen Beach and Elizabeth Handshaw of Smithtown 26 grand children greatgrandchildren and five great-greatgrandchildren Funeral rites were held at All Saints Cemetery in Jensen Beach.
