Obituary article dated September 5, 1888

Mrs. Mary Ball, the mother of our townsman, Mr. L. C. Ball, was buried at Leesville, last Thursday afternoon, she having died at the advanced age of 74 years, 10 months and 16 days. This world was better for Mrs. Ball having lived in it. She married, at the age of 24, a man 37 years her senior, he being a widower 61 years of age. She gave birth to five children, two sons and three daughters all of whom survive. In November 1850 her husband died and she has remained unmarried ever since having been a widow almost 38 years. At the death of her husband, her eldest child L. C. was only 10 years old. Her husband left her a farm which had been deeded to him by the goverment and on this she remained until her death. Instead of sending her children out to be reared by strangers she kept them with her on the farm and gave them such educations as they would receive. She saw them grown to manhood and womanhood and well established. At her death she left them the same old farm without the encumbrance of a dollar. She labored hard for those about her and when she died her last words were "My dear children." There was a very large attendance at the funeral and there were present 28 descendants of the deceased, all her decendants except two great grandchilden who were prevented being there by the illness of their mother. Her life was a hard fought battle, but she was the conqueror.

Children:
Lemuel C. 'L.C.' (1839-1906)
Henry, Jr. (1842-1906)
Mary Margaret (1844-1921)
Sarah Jane (1846-1899)
Christina (1847-1934)
