Oregon, Ill., April 4 - Rev. Barton H. Cartwright, aged 85, died here last evening. He was born near Auburn, N.Y., March 9, 1810. His father was a Baptist minister. He started for the West in March, 1833, and occupied two months working his way to what is now Burlington, Iowa. In the spring of 1834 he was appointed a missionary in Iowa and organized at Flint Hills the first Protestant Episcopal Christian society in the State. Until 1863 he did duty in different part of Northern Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan. He was chaplain of the Ninety-Second Illinois Volunteer Mounted Infantry throughout the rebellion, and marched with Sherman to the sea. On his return he resumed his ministry with the Rock Rover conference and continued in active service until 1883 when he was superannuated. He married in 1839 Miss Chloe J. Benedict. She survives him. They had eight children, six of whom are living - Mrs. Frank N. March, Judge James H. Cartwright, Charles B. Cartwright, Orville Cartwright, Alfred Cartwright, and Ellen Cartwright.
