Irene Casanova Arzola, 98, passed away Friday, April 13, 2007.

Irene, born June 28, 1908, was a descendant of the Canary Islanders who settled in San Antonio in 1731.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Esteban and Tomasa Casanova; her husband, Daniel Arzola; brothers Jose Casanova and Amos Casanova; and sisters Delfina Cervantes and Herminia Felan.

Irene, a loving mother and grandmother, is survived by eight children and their spouses, Rudy and Sylvia Arzola, Daniel and Maria Arzola, Olivia and Trinidad Garcia, Elvira and Louis Gonzalez, Raul and Nieves Arzola, Bertha Rodriguez, Robert and Bertha Arzola, and Frank Arzola; 21 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation began 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 17 in the Roy Akers-Zizik Kearns Funeral Home in San Antonio, with a rosary recited at 7 p.m.

On Wednesday, an 8 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower in San Antonio, with interment following in San Fernando Cemetery No. 2, San Antonio.

The Arzola family would like to thank the staff of St. Francis Nursing Home and the staff at VITAS Hospice for the love and excellent care provided to Irene.
